GIF:
The Graphics Interchange Format is an image file format uniquely able to reduce the file size of images by removing the number of colors available in the “pallet.” This compression method is most useful for icons or cartoon-style images. The GIF format was designed by CompuServe to speed the transfer of images over a dial-up connection.
